Where the Forts Are: The Geographical Distribution of Forts in Florida

Mr. Tim Brock, Outreach Coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network, will present a fascinating lecture on how early Florida military outposts were distributed throughout the region. From early Spanish exploration through the Seminole Wars, military groups have taken advantage of Florida’s convoluted coasts and natural outlooks to position their forts for strategic advantage. This presentation will provide an in depth look at where and why these forts were located across Florida’s early landscape.

Historical Interpretation of Forts

Paul Wenglowsky, Curator of Education at the Orange County Regional History Center, will examine how historians use forts as interpretive tools for understanding the past. The presentation will specifically look at how the San Marcos Castillo in St. Augustine is used to teach the public about Florida’s rich colonial history.

Christmas in March: An Introduction to Fort Christmas

Joseph Adams, Recreation Specialist at the Fort Christmas Historical Park will provide a brief overview on the fort and some of the fascinating exhibits and structures open to the public.
